The major challenge in developing robust integrated and continuous downstream bioprocesses is to identify a set of unit operations with sufficiently orthogonal selectivity and complementary modes of column operation. In this presentation I will discuss recent advances in developing chromatographic materials with novel selectivity as well as enhanced understanding of the molecular basis of these selectivities. Further, new experimental approaches using rapid high resolution analytical techniques to evaluate the selectivity of these materials as well as various modeling approaches to classify orthogonal selectivity will be presented. Finally, examples of some proposed integrated processes using this approach will be presented.
